Any type of abuse, whether emotional, verbal or physical, can leave people with deep-seated psychological damage and scars that do not go away. If you have suffered abuse in the past then you may find it difficult to cope with life in a normal way, feeling overwhelmed with negative feelings or symptoms such as panic attacks, depression and stress. Finding your way towards a bright future full of hope and happiness can be difficult without consulting with a psychoanalyst who deals with abuse.
Symptoms of past abuse can be many and varied. You might find yourself suffering from anxiety, inability to trust others and upsetting thoughts. A professional abuse analyst or counsellor will be able to provide you with ways of coping and minimising the distressing after effects of abuse. By working through difficult emotions and learning how to care for yourself, your emotions will overwhelm you less and less and trust will return.
There are many therapies that your abuse counsellor may make use of i.e. eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) or mindfulness, meditation or even involve experiences such as art or musical therapy. Most of all, they will put together a treatment programme that suits you.
You may be treated for past abuse on a one to one basis or your counsellor may involve you in group sessions. This can be particularly helpful as you will mix with others that have suffered in the same way.
If you would like us to put you in touch with a counsellor or analyst that makes use of therapy to treat abuse, please contact one of our therapists who is experienced in this area. Alternatively please complete the form in the 'Contact Us' section and we will recommend a therapist to you.
