If your therapist suggests that Jungian analysis is right for you, they will kick off the process by looking at what makes you who you are; this might include delving into experiences in your past and how they are holding you back. The main purpose of this therapy is to remove any blocks that may be in place.
If you are suffering due to anxiety or depression, this could be because elements of your personality have not developed fully. Are you assertive enough? Are you willing to take risks? If you are continually holding back this may relate to issues or traumas in your past. This could be anything but may involve physical, sexual or emotional abuse, incidents that have caused major stress or an event in your life that triggered something i.e. divorce, accident, illness etc.
Feeling comfortable with your Jungian Analyst
When taking part in this type of Jungian analysis, it is essential that you feel comfortable and at ease with your therapist as you will need to feel able to ‘be yourself’. This way you will be able to open up and talk freely about any issues that you may have with no holds barred and nothing left untouched; if you feel any guilt, shame, anger or despair, all needs to be told to your therapist if they are to be able to treat you correctly and thoroughly.
Don’t be surprised if you experience deep-seated feelings being brought to the fore, experiencing emotions that may have been deeply buried in your subconscious for years. The main thing is not to feel bad about any of this – the more you are able to reveal to your counsellor, the more easily they will be able to understand what is making you who you are today, and able to deal with the associated problems that come with this.
About your counsellor
Your counsellor will have been involved in an in-depth study and training of Jungian analysis in order to gain a deep understanding or both the psychoanalysis and psychotherapy elements of it, including such things as attachment theory. Once they have taken you through the first couple of sessions and gained an insight into what needs to change, they will discuss treatment with you and how many times you need to see them and for how long. Sometimes the amount of sessions required will need to remain open-ended until your problems begin to lessen and you feel more comfortable with being yourself.
