Anyone can find themselves struggling due to difficult emotions or mental health issues and this is where telephone therapy can help.

What does telephone therapy involve?

Telephone therapy is a form of counselling that involves you being treated by a therapist via phone.  You will be able to talk freely about how you feel and what sort of distressing thoughts you may be having.  No matter what type of problems you are facing, talking on the telephone will work by enabling you to understand why you feel the way that you do and how it is affecting your thoughts and behaviour. You should feel able to talk about everything that is bothering you and open up fully to your counsellor so that your feelings can be explored in depth.  There are an assortment of treatments that can be used to help you, all with the intention of enabling you to cope with damaging emotions.

Whether your sessions are referred to as telephone counselling or telephone therapy, they will always follow a similar process.

What sort of problems can talking on the telephone with a therapist help with?

Telephone therapy can be used to help you to deal with issues similar to the following:

  • Coming to terms with difficult times in your life, such as dealing with the loss of a loved one
  • Coping with traumatic past events, sometimes going back into childhood
  • Understanding how to deal with anger or low self-confidence
  • Understanding why an illness or disease is making you feel the way you do

Anxiety and depression are also very often treated by counsellors over the phone so if you have one of the problems shown above or any other common mental health issues, do not hesitate to find help.

Which type of telephone therapy will suit you best?

Some telephone therapies are better suited to specific mental health issues so your counsellor will decide which will be the most effective in terms of treating your problem.  This will not be done until an initial consultation has been carried out and your therapist has a good idea of what you need to achieve.  Here are just a few types of therapy that you might find your counsellor referring to:

  • Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT)
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Telephone Counselling
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Much will depend upon the problem that is being treated and which type of therapy your counsellor feels will be the most powerful in terms of resolving your difficulties.  In-between sessions you may also be asked to do some homework and this will help you to move forward with your telephone counselling sessions in a very hands-on way.
