I work with individuals and couples seeking help with a variety of issues ranging from adjustment to life events, such as loss, trauma, illness, and problems in the workplace, to long-standing difficulties relating to self-esteem, addictions, and mood disorders. Some of my clients seek psychological support, more generally, to enhance life competencies, interpersonal communication skills, and personal growth. I also provide coaching and consultations to individuals and organizations.
My philosophy is that change is possible in all of us with the right guidance and the will to do it.
I bring extensive experience in a broad range of mental health settings, and approach each case with sensitivity to the culture, ethnicity, and sexual orientation of each individual. My specializations include: Adult Mental Health Psychology and Psychotherapy; Clinical Health Psychology (with a focus on oncology and sexual health); Trauma; Mindfulness training; Work with expatriate communities; Consultations; Coaching and personal development; Stress management in the workplace; Supervision to allied health care professionals.
Each of the above areas of mental health has enhanced my understanding of the range of symptoms and consequences of emotional and psychological distress. In the area of oncology and sexual health, for example, I have gained deeper insight into the mind-body connection, and have helped my clients avoid being defined by their difficulties. Working closely with refugees from war zones has taught me about the human potential for recovery with the help of validation and trauma-specific intervention. My work with expatriate communities also highlighted the profound impact of cultural dislocation on individuals and their families, as well as our ability to adapt to challenging circumstances. In my role as a coach, I learnt how anxiety often hampers career progress. More generally, treating individuals who struggle to make sense of their lives, due either to low self esteem or mental health disorders has reinforced my conviction in the scope for human recovery and growth.
In the course of the therapy process, hidden barriers may come to light, offering valuable insights into, why, for example, we say “Yes” when we mean “No”, why we fall back into unhelpful patterns of behaviour, or fail to reach our full potential in our personal and professional lives. I encourage my clients to see therapy as a developmental journey in which the focus may switch between learning new life skills and generating deeper personal insights. It is important to remember that sustainable change may require patience and commitment.
I provide a safe space in which difficult issues can be expressed and examined in a non-judgmental way. In my work, I draw on a number of psychological modalities, ranging from skills-focused interventions, such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness training, to insight-orientated approaches informed by psychoanalytic ideas. Irrespective of the type of intervention, I aim to adapt general theories of human development to the uniqueness of each individual, with an emphasis on “what works for whom”.
I offer both short and long-term therapy
